Systems Comprehension During Corrective Maintenance: Making Sense of Failures in Integrated Systems

This paper investigates how software developers comprehend software failures in integrated systems, where the developers have no direct access to the source code of the third-party software being integrated. By analyzing corrective maintenance of integrated systems as a sensemaking process, we propose that systems comprehension can be understood as a result of the interaction between developers and users engaging with the software being maintained. As such, systems comprehension is an ongoing process seeking sufficiency and plausibility rather than accuracy in comprehending the software failure and the system producing the failure. The results presented in this paper are based on observations from an ethnographic study of the Gentoo open source software (OSS) community, a large distributed volunteer community of over 320 developers developing and maintaining a software system for distributing and integrating third-party OSS software packages with different Unix versions.
